What is floor screed?
Floor screed is a layer of material installed over a prepared floor structure to create a smooth and level surface for the final floor covering. It can be laid over concrete, insulation, membranes or underfloor heating pipework, depending on the design of the floor.

Do you screed residential properties?
Yes. We welcome enquiries for extensions, new builds, renovations, conversions and other residential flooring projects. See residential screeding.
Do you undertake commercial screeding?
Yes. We work with builders, developers, main contractors and commercial clients. Send drawings, floor area and the screed specification to info@johalscreeding.co.uk.
Can screed be installed over underfloor heating?
Yes — suitable screed systems are commonly used with underfloor heating. The right system and depth depend on the floor design and the heating manufacturer's specification. See underfloor heating screed.
What information do you need for a quote?
It helps to have the project address, approximate floor area in square metres, required screed depth, floor construction, underfloor heating details and your preferred installation date.
How long does floor screed take to dry?
Drying time varies with the screed product, the depth, temperature, ventilation, moisture conditions and the site environment. Always follow the relevant product specification before installing the final floor covering.
What floor finishes can be installed over screed?
Depending on the screed system and preparation, finished floors may include tiles, timber, laminate, carpet, vinyl and other flooring systems. The screed must reach the appropriate condition and moisture level before the final covering goes down.
How thick does floor screed need to be?
Required thickness varies with the screed product and floor construction. Bonded, unbonded, floating and underfloor-heating floors all have different requirements.
Do I need to prepare the floor before you arrive?
The floor generally needs to be clean and correctly prepared for the chosen screeding system. If you are unsure, speak to us before your screeding date and we will talk it through — see floor preparation.
